Abstract
Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe.

00:01:16 - Rabbi Berel Lazar gives a speech in Russian. Men sing nigunim (traditional melodies). Adults and children at tables in the dining room.

00:05:36 - Men dancing. They are joined by Rabbi Lazar and his little daughter.

00:07:25 - Rabbi Lazar explains that he made his speech in Russian to Jews who have come from Moscow to Pittsburgh.

00:08:39 - (Partial audio) Children watching from the women's gallery. Chanie holding her son.

00:09:50 - (Partial audio) Young children eating snacks in a classroom. Chanie and Berel arrive back home with their baby and are greeted by their older children. Family photos, including wedding portraits, boy with long hair before his upshern (ritual marking a boy's first haircut). Portraits of Shneur Zalmen of Liady, Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, and Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn.
