Abstract
From the moment of birth, children are social creatures. Infants in all cultures develop an intense bond with their caregivers, a bond researchers call attachment. The experiences children have in the first years of life shape their sense of themselves and connections with others. Researchers agree on the importance of the attachment bond, but how to measure it engenders controversy. Temperament may be a major determiner of how a child reacts when his parent leaves, not insecure attachment.
