Abstract
In the early stages of adolescence, children tend to be egocentric, feeling the eyes of an imaginary audience on them, believing their life is unique and different from other people. These early stirrings of "self" include trying different personalities and roles, looking for answers regarding the kind of life they will lead. Media makes it easy for teens to experiment with different iterations of self, what Erik Erikson called the psychosocial moratorium, an important part of the identity development process.
