Abstract
People who have something that captures their attention and their sense of purpose make richer contributions than people who are self focused. Psychologist Erik Erikson theorized that the developmental task of the elder years is to reflect on life and integrate its triumphs and failures, as Jim Birren has encouraged with his Guided Autobiography groups. As he says, it's a "way of releasing the wisdom of people who have lived a long time and lived through many things."
