Abstract
The field of psychoneuroimmunology seeks to understand the interaction between the immune system and the central nervous system. Most stress research is focused on the fight-fight reaction, and more recently threats to the social self. The autonomic nervous system reacts quickly to stress; hormones become involved more slowly. Cortisol, a stress hormone activates certain regions of the brain which trigger the hypothalamus to orchestrate the release of a host of hormones. Chronically overproducing these hormones can have a toxic effect on the brain, immune cells, the heart and other organs.
