Abstract
Stephen Hinshaw and Kay Redfield Jameson share their experiences with bipolar illness, one as a child whose father suffered from the disease, the other from a very personal point of view. The line between normality and abnormality is blurry, as one doctor notes. If a set of behaviors is dysfunctional and gets in the way of a person's social or occupational functioning, then we're more likely to put it in the category of a disorder and target it for treatment. Serious mental disorders have both biological and environmental components, and may be gender linked.
