Abstract
Schizophrenia is a disorder in which people lose touch with reality. It commonly strikes in late adolescence after an apparently normal childhood. Thinking becomes fragmented; ideas are irrational, delusional and bizarre. Schizophrenia patients show a restricted range of emotional expression. They may hallucinate, seeing, hearing, or smelling things that no one else can perceive. The suicide rate among young people in particular is quite high, in the 5 to 10% range.
