Abstract
In recent years biomedical therapies have joined psychotherapies to revolutionize treatment for severe mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The first antipsychotic drug Thorazine, discovered accidentally, caused side effects, but newer medications appear to be successful in dealing with both positive and negative symptoms. Drug effects vary with individual body chemistry. Kay Redfield Jamison compares her response to Lithium when it was initially prescribed and the dose she's on today. But as she notes, she doesn't have the luxury of thinking about side effects. It's either take the medication or be dead.
