Abstract
Controlled, multi-site field studies by NIMH indicate that the best outcome for most psychological disorders is a combination of good psychotherapy and medication. Getting people into treatment is one of the hardest things in psychiatric and psychological practice. There is a tendency for the illness to get worse over time, but newer medications not only prevent future episodes but seem to reverse some of the damage and cause neuronal growth. With the aid of neuroimaging technology therapists may be able to optimize biomedical choices for their patients and track their progress.
