Abstract
Attitudes-- feelings based on beliefs-- predispose our reactions to objects, people, and events. The very thing that makes us intelligent beings is also that which allows us to fall prey to biases or mistaken perceptions. When we stereotype people we assume things about them we don't actually see in the individual. We may also fail to appreciate the impact of context on behavior, as Phil Zimbardo clearly demonstrated in his inmate/jailer role play. As John Cacioppo notes, the social context fundamentally changes the mixture of the cake.
