Membership in a group is of great significance to most people. One of the first things groups do is develop a socially shared definition of who they are, what their purpose is, what their vocabulary is and their social structure. It's natural for people to prefer those who are like them and be skeptical of outsiders. In fact, people are quite distressed when they are out of step with the group, and often will just give up their belief and follow along.
