Abstract
The behavior of those we're with can be contagious as John Bargh and his colleagues observed in a group of experiments. A volunteer who is asked to comment on a some pictures soon begins to mimic the mannerisms of the person she is working with without realizing it. This inclination to conform without conscious intent was also tested at the Research Center for Virtual Environments and Behavior in a blackjack game in which players who join the game make bets similar to someone who is already at the table. People generally go to great lengths to protect their standing in a group even it means adjusting their behavior to fit some standard or norm.
