Abstract
Do people who have a chance to work with others toward a shared goal contribute less because a group is involved, as social loafing research seems to suggest, or contribute their fair share. The question for social movement theorists is why do they participate at all. Francesca Polletta suggests several reasons: a sense of obligation to people who are already in the movement; becoming interested in a movement they sort of "wandered" into; participation gives people purpose and becomes an end in itself.
