Abstract
Linguist, author and university professor Noam Chomsky explains that the variety of languages in the United States has declined very sharply in the last two hundred years. "When the colonists first came here from Europe, " Dr. Chomsky notes, "...there were thousands of languages....(now) we have the sense of a homogeneous linguistic region in the United States." He points out that this is not the case everywhere. "There are plenty of people in Italy who can't talk to their grandmother," Dr. Chomsky says.
