Abstract
Linguist, author and university professor Noam Chomsky explores the question of what happens when a child is deprived of exposure to language. If such deprivation is part of a larger problem, such as lack of contact with others, the non-acquisition of language may come about as a result of that lack of contact. "So, like depth perception in, say, sheep can be affected by mother-neonate contact. It's not that the mother teaches the lamb how to see depth, it's just that the systems don't operate unless there are certain kinds of sympathetic interaction taking place," Dr. Chomsky explains.
