Abstract
Professor of psychiatry and author Kay Redfield Jamison explains that getting someone with a psychiatric disorder into treatment is very hard, and keeping them there can be even harder. A related challenge, Dr. Jamison notes, is convincing patients to continue taking their medication. "It's the major clinical problem in treating bipolar illness," she says. Dr. Jamison also advises family members to read as much as they can about the illness in question, and take advantage of the many support groups for family members of those who have psychiatric disorders.
