Abstract
As part of its emphasis on personal freedom and responsibility, U.S. culture promotes the notion that every American has the opportunity to achieve success...especially in the financial arena. Most Americans believe that theirs is a classless society, a society of great opportunity. Many sociologists, however, contend that opportunity in the United States has declined in recent years, particularly for those without the education to participate in the emerging information age.
