Abstract
Poverty has long been a fact of life in many African-American communities. In part this has been due to discrimination but, more recently, broad-based structural changes in the American economy have also played a part. The financial challenge facing many in the African-American community extends beyond income generation. The typical African-American family today has only about one-eighth the assets or net worth of the median White family in the U.S.
