Abstract
The single population in the United States includes a broad spectrum of people: the never marrieds, those who have been married but are divorced or widowed; and gays and lesbians who are not allowed to marry. Demographically, more women live alone than men, particularly as they get older, and more whites live alone than Asians or Hispanics because of the intergenerational support these two cultures provide. The single life is plagued with illusions that have little basis in fact.
