Abstract
In the last fifty years, the number of cohabiting singles in the United States has mushroomed. Among whites, cohabitation is an experiment, a kind of trial marriage. For African- or Mexican-Americans, cohabitation is more often an alternative or substitute for marriage. It is common to find freedom and lack of constraint in such arrangements, but also lower investment and support.
