Abstract
Men and women often have different approaches to conflict resolution. Couples argue vehemently about small things, when the underlying issue is how they are defining the relationship. Researcher John Gottman has found that successful couples avoid using destructive tactics like criticism, contempt, defensiveness, or stonewalling. The art of fair fighting involves expressing thoughts and emotions without personal attacks and resolving issues in ways that leave people feeling heard, loved, and respected when it's over.
