Abstract
Marriage tends to go through various phases and stages. During the early years of marriage, newlyweds settle into their new positions as husband and wife. The arrival of the first child may be the least happy time in the career of a marriage, a time when the relationship needs particular attention. Today married couples find themselves sharing roles in ways that would not have existed a generation or two ago. Twice as many mothers of young children are now in the labor force without childcare support or adequate help with home responsibilities. The 20 percent of couples who do share home tasks and childcare are happier than those who don't.
