Abstract
Studies show that violence tends to occur in predictable patterns starting with emotional violence, then escalating into severe physical assaults followed by a show of remorse. Women often stay in violent relationships for several reasons, as we see in the case of Donna. They hold out hope that their partner will change, their life has been threatened, or they fear the unknown even more than what they are experiencing. In some cases men are the victims of physical and emotional abuse, although such abuse is seldom reported and is generally not as severe.
