Abstract
The moral argument against slavery weakens as it becomes more political, primarily because most Northerners do not want to destroy the Union. The most ardent abolitionist support is found in the Northeast among legislators like John Quincy Adams and the Whigs. Only a small number of people accept the abolitionist position that slavery must be eliminated in a single stroke. But the crusade as been launched and the ongoing debate is a constant reminder of how deeply the institution of slavery is dividing the United States.
