Abstract
Issues related to America's expansion and westward development begin to spiral out of control in the 1850s. In Congress, aging senators Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and John C. Calhoun debate the future of union. The South fears what will happen if land committed to slavery remains constant and the slave population continues to grow. Clay creates an omnibus bill which attempts to address all of the issues in dispute, but it is defeated after six months of debate. A younger group of political leaders, including William Seward, Stephen A. Douglas, and Jefferson Davis push through sections of the omnibus bill after sudden death of Zachary Taylor. It is a temporary patchwork that satisfies no one.
