Abstract
Outsiders attempt to influence territorial elections in Kansas in 1855 and as a result a pro-slavery territorial legislature is fraudulently elected. President Pierce decides to accept election results rather than intervene and stir up trouble, but trouble is already brewing. When free staters establish their own capital in Lawrence, Kansas, brutal guerilla fighting breaks out. The U.S. Army is sent in to keep the peace, but the heated controversy and physical combat spill over into the halls of Congress.
