Abstract
In the presidential election of 1856 Democratic party leaders, looking for a candidate who cannot be linked to bleeding Kansas, nominate James Buchanan, a party regular who was in England during the crisis. The newly-formed Republican Party nominates John Fremont who mapped the Oregon Trail. Young, ambitious former Whigs join the Republican Party which combines the economic program of Whigs with anti-slavery principles. Two significant events occur just after Buchanan's election: a financial panic hits country and the Supreme Court issues its ruling in Dred Scott v. Sandford.
