Abstract
John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry is a divisive and controversial aspect of the politics leading to the 1860 election. Abraham Lincoln speaks out against slavery in an 1859 tour that launches his candidacy. Meanwhile the Democratic party splits into Northern and Southern factions at the convention, with each nominating separate candidates. Lincoln gains the Republican nomination over Seward for Republicans. Campaigning among the major candidates is intense. Lincoln vows to limit the expansion of slavery and offers a broad-based program of economic expansion. Douglas's Northern Democratic platform heralds popular sovereignty and talks about capturing Cuba to extend the slave plantation system. Breckinridge, the Southern Democratic candidate campaigns mainly on the sanctity of slave property. With the Democrats split, Lincoln wins the presidential election of 1860.
