Abstract
A small garrison of federal troops at Fort Sumter, a new fort under construction in Charleston Harbor, is running out of food and supplies in March, 1861. In response to Commander Anderson's appeal for help President Lincoln sends a ship to re-supply the fort, a peaceful rather than a warlike gesture. Meanwhile Jefferson Davis learns that Confederate troops have only a 50-50 chance of capturing Fort Pickering and focuses Southern efforts on seizing the more vulnerable of the two forts. On April 9, 1861, Fort Sumter and its small contingent of troops surrender to Beauregard. The war between the states has begun.
