Abstract
In the spring and summer of 1862, the Peninsular Campaign led by Union Army General George McClellan is driven back by the Confederates commanded by Robert E. Lee, then defeated once again at Bull Run (Manassas). Ulysses S. Grant's forces defeat the South in a bloody battle in the Western Theater. There is the sense on both sides that the war is getting "harder." Jefferson Davis, Confederate president, consolidates federal powers in response to what now appears to be a prolonged war that has no end in sight.
