Abstract
States and territories in the American West, embedded in controversy leading up to the Civil War, are removed from the major fighting. Both North and South seek access to California gold, but when Confederate soldiers march out of Texas into New Mexico en route to California they are defeated at Glorietta Pass. Some of the Native American tribes who were part of the "removal" to Oklahoma are themselves slave holders. The tribes have split loyalties during the Civil War, although the majority side with the Confederates because of their treatment at the hands of the United States.
