Abstract
The Republicans retain their majority in the mid-term elections of 1862 despite Democratic gains. Lincoln continues to have difficulties with inept generals. After Antietam, Lincoln fires McClellan who seems more interested in political than military battles, and replaces him with Ambrose Burnside, a disaster of a general who is in command for only a short period of time before being replaced by Joe Hooker. Even though Hooker has greater troop strength, he too manages to lose to Lee and his forces at Chancellorsville.
