Abstract
1863 is a pivotal year in determining the outcome of the war between the states. Three significant battles prove to be turning points in the conflict. The first takes place at Vicksburg along the Mississippi River; the second in Pennsylvania where Lee again seeks a climactic battle that will destroy the Union Army. After days of battle at the small town of Gettysburg, Lee retreats back into Virginia, never to fight in Union territory again. To Lincoln's dismay, Union commander George Meade fails to follow. The Confederacy is getting weaker.
