Abstract
After occupying Chattanooga, Union forces under William Rosecrans pursue retreating Confederate troops into a trap at Chickamauga and suffer a major loss. As Union troops retreat back to Chattanooga, General Bragg follows too slowly in military hindsight, methodically constructing his fortifications rather than attacking Rosecrans while he and his troops are vulnerable. Ulysses S. Grant, fresh from his victory at Vicksburg, is given command of the Western Theater, bringing in fresh supplies, organization, and strategies that result in the ultimate control of Chattanooga by Union forces. On the Eastern front, Lee and Meade are involved in a series of skirmishes that have little impact on the larger war.
