Abstract
Both commanders attempt to break the trench deadlock at Petersburg, Lee with Early's raid on Washington and Grant by digging a tunnel under Confederate fortifications and planting explosives. The Battle of the Crater which begins early in the morning is so fraught with errors on the Union side that by noon the North sustains over 4000 casualties. Ultimately, however, the Union's greater troop strength proves decisive, and Lee is unable to hold either Petersburg or Richmond. General Lee and the Confederate forces surrender to General Grant at Appomattox. In military terms the long war is over, even though Jefferson Davis and a few Southern diehards refuse to accept defeat. Now the difficult task of reuniting the shattered nation begins.
