Abstract
By August 1914 Germany has declared war on Russia and France and invades Belgium in preparation for an attack on France. Its strategy is to knock France out of the war before tackling Russia, the more serious threat. Most observers predict the war will be brief. At the end of six weeks the German army is within 35 miles of Paris, but its supply lines are long and the soldiers exhausted. Opposing forces dig in and the long destructive war of attrition begins, trench to trench.
