Abstract
The Senate Foreign Relations committee chaired by Henry Cabot Lodge rejects the treaty negotiated at Versailles. The idea of collective security required by membership in League of Nations is problematic for both liberals and conservatives. The U.S. signs a separate peace treaty with Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1921 but does not join the League of Nations.
