Abstract
Economic problems, labor unrest, racial tensions and the intensity of antiradicalism combine to create a general sense of disillusionment in the country following the first World War. The federal government is tarnished by the repressive and coercive measures it has taken. As the Republican candidate for president in 1920 Warren Harding's campaign is based on a return to normalcy.
