Abstract
Blacks in the rural South fall to the bottom of the economic ladder; blacks in the North are first to be thrown into unemployment. Mexicans also lose their jobs when workforces are restructured, particularly in California. There is increasing evidence of hostility among racial groups. Local charities often deny welfare to people of Mexican descent. When the Mexican government encourages people to return to their homeland, 500,000 accept the offer in the early 1930s. The Depression reinforces patterns of discrimination for Asian Americans as well. The only difference is that Asians have no fortunes or jobs to lose. Asian economic activity is within their own community. The gains women have achieved in the workplace are also challenged during the Depression, however the "one job per family" motto does not decrease the percentage of married women employed. Employers hire women because they do not have to pay them as much.
