Abstract
Some of the most strident attacks on the New Deal come from critics on the right who believe Roosevelt is threatening capitalism and waging war against the wealthy. The wealthy hate Roosevelt with a passion, while critics on left blame FDR for being too conservative. Three protest movements in particular have a national impact, one led by California physician Francis Townsend who devises a plan to provide pensions to all retiring 65-year olds who open up jobs for younger people; Father Charles Caughlin, a priest near Detroit, wants to make more money available and nationalize banks. Governor Huey Long creates the Share Our Wealth Society which advocates taking money from rich and giving to it to the poor, thus guaranteeing a minimal income.
