Abstract
For many months, the political talk of the country revolves around the question of Franklin Roosevelt's intentions. Will he break with tradition and run for an unprecedented third term? The Republicans select Wendell Wilkie, the head of the country's largest public utility holding company, as their presidential candidate. Wilkie proves to be a charismatic and progressive Republican candidate. The campaign is dominated by the war and the extent to which the U.S. should be involved. By the summer of 1940 German's had captured Paris and the battle of Britain, it is felt, will soon begin. There is growing concern over Japanese aggression. Election results are closer than in 1932 or 1936, but Roosevelt wins decisively.
