Abstract
The capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa moves U.S. troops closer to Tokyo. In desperation, the Japanese launch suicide kamikaze attacks. The firebombing of Tokyo and the anticipation of a final battle on the mainland prompts the Japanese government to evacuate children to the countryside, including Harvard historian Akira Iriye, then 10 years old. Moderate Japanese leaders realize it is time to bring the war to an end, but military leaders resist. Japan asks Russia to mediate, a move Dr. Iriye labels a horrendous mistake.
