Abstract
Different alternatives are available to ending the war in the Pacific. Truman's decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki is still being debated. Harvard historian Akira Iriye talks about the shock of the bombing, the Soviet Union's entry into the war, and the fact that Japan lost the war the people were told they were winning. Before the blasts, no one had a sense of just how lethal the radiation from an atomic explosion would be. After the second bomb, Emperor Hirohito decided Japan would have to endure the unendurable and surrender to the United States.
