Abstract
As the war concludes, Japan is to be demilitarized, democratized, and decentralized. Stalin had agreed at Yalta to enter the Pacific war three months after European fighting was concluded. The United States would have welcomed Soviet involvement if an invasion had been involved, but at the point that atomic bombs were the weapons of choice, and the U.S. has no interest in Soviet involvement. Soviet's declaration of war against Japan gives them an excuse to occupy North Korea, setting the stage for growing antagonism between the world's two strongest nations, the United States and the Soviet Union.
