Abstract
Inflation soars in early post-war years compounded by sharp increases in labor unrest. Workers who willingly support World War II concessions feel that similar requests related to the Cold War are unfair. There are major strikes in the automobile, electrical, and steel industries in 1945. In 1946 John L. Lewis leads the United Mine Workers on a 40-day strike which ends when Truman seizes the mines and orders miners back to work. Almost simultaneously the nation's railroads shutdown for the first time in U.S. history. Unlike the relationship between the unions and FDR, unions mistrust Truman, although as time passes, the relationship improves. The reconversion process difficult for women and minorities who had joined workplace during war. Many lose their jobs or their rank to returning servicemen.
