Abstract
As Jackson takes office, he and his followers are eager to extend the opportunities for government service. Many positions in the Executive Branch had been held by the Eastern establishment for a generation or more. Although Jackson is widely criticized for creating a spoils system, for bringing people to Washington from his area of the country. Patronage politics is more than a distributive tool; it is a way of regulating party organization and enhancing party control.
