Abstract
For most Americans, the 1950s are years of astonishing prosperity in contrast to a world economy that has been devastated by the war. Europeans turn to socialism during this period while the U. S. grips the free enterprise system with enthusiasm, the only major industrialized economy equipped to provide reconstruction There is a vast boom in consumer expenditures that was not possible during war time. The government becomes major customer of American industry investing in the military, construction of roads and bridges, and communication networks. The extraordinary need for housing after the war is supported by the GI Bill benefit and affordable loans.
