Abstract
A relatively small number of companies gain control of a huge share of nation's economic activity. To prevent strikes that will interfere with operations these industrial giants negotiate postwar contracts, generous wage increases and benefit packages for employees in return for workers abandoning control of workplace. As union membership declines proportionately the AFL-CIO merges in 1955 and becomes more conservative in its approach. In the late 1950s unions are tarnished with image of corruptions. Robert Kennedy launches a crusade against Jimmy Hoffa, head of the Teamster's Union. The decline of unions that begins in the mid 1950s never stops.
