Abstract
There are remarkable advances in medicine in the postwar years, medical breakthroughs with development of antibiotics like penicillin and vaccines to suppress influenza and polio. The federal government funnels enormous amounts of money into scientific research, initially to create weapon systems. Before World War II scientists were wary of working for the federal government, but starting with Manhattan Project scientists begin to realize the impossibility of doing "big science" without federal dollars. They realize too that the federal government is not going to attach a lot of strings to research agenda. Investment in research and development benefits the private sector.
