Abstract
The United States detonates the first hydrogen bomb in 1952 based on the research of Edward Teller, Manhattan Project physicist. The development of hydrogen weapons sparks yet another race between the U. S. and Russia, the race to develop unmanned rockets and long-range missiles capable of delivering weapons to distant targets. Both the American and Soviet space programs grow out of this contest, but in this arena the Soviets score first, placing the satellite Sputnik in orbit in 1957. U. S. embarrassment results in federal investments to improve math and science in nation's schools.
